Intrepid surprised us all with a new feature being implemented in Alpha 2. While its pretty cool, people do seem to have some concerns with this new fancy AI thing the kids use

Ashes of Creation is a unique take on the MMORPG experience. Our world structure is dynamic, and built to react to your actions. Cities will rise and fall as you shape the world of Verra. Quests and secrets will unlock as populations gather and their needs grow. As the world’s NPC structure is established in real-time, you will have the ability to destroy what’s been created, paving the way for new developments, populations, and change. Political strife and intrigue will play a very real role in the structure of your experience. Gone are the days of static worlds; change is here to stay!

  1. Computer games are the obvious use case for AI generated content. Advances in workplace technology always reduce the demand for specific human skills. There are people who still make buggy whips by hand and people who drive horse drawn buggies, but these are niche, hobby and marginal occupations. There will always be voice actors/artists, but as a reliable occupation, it is almost certainly doomed. The quality of AI industry leading generated voice, as of today, is for all practical purposes indistinguishable from human voices. The robotic AI voices you mention are not representative of where the leading edge of the tech is as of now. With the incredible rate of progress in the quality AI generated content, within a year or less, all fields of human created content will be in danger of becoming obsolete.

  2. Just on the topic of the AI Voice acting – the game was going to have zero voice acting. So I don't think in this case it's taking a job that would otherwise have been filled by a person (but for sure it will be in some other places) – and so it's perfectly fine that they can spend I suppose significantly less money to pad the game with some more immersion and invest more resources into the core gameplay (hopefully).

  3. for an MMO, I wouldn't expect the developers to hire Voice Actors to voice every NPC or character in the game. I would expect people in the voice acting world to either donate their voice or maybe people who want to break out into the VA world be willing to volunteer (for lack of a better word) to have their voices used as a character in a game. If their voice gets liked enough, they may even get companies to look at them for a major project.

  4. If you want this game to come out before you’re dead you better hope they do.

Human beings can not create the amount of content and assets needed in an efficient and cost effective manner in any reasonable time frame for next gen MMO’s.

  5. would be a nice touch if you could implement your voice for giving your character a voice….
if u change sex, you could maybe giv your voice a certain pitch to increase immersion.
would still be your own voice but just with another pitch to fit to the characters sex.

  6. I've always said this but AI should be a tool not a replacement for people. Developers should finish what they can development wise, and then allow ai to flesh out everything and add extra buildings and whatnot to the world map.
