AI voiceover for NPCs in Ashes of Creation has become one of the most heavily debated topics after the recent Development Livestream with Ashes of Creation Alpha Two Lionhold Preview. We discussed this topic on my first Twitch stream with viewers, breaking down the most common arguments and opinions.

Ashes of Creation MMORPG is an ambitious project by Intrepid Studios that is led by Steven Sharif. It aims to redefine the MMO genre by offering a truly dynamic and player-driven experience. At the heart of its vision is the concept of a living, breathing world where every decision players make has a lasting impact on the game environment. The game features a unique node system, deep crafting and economy mechanics, PvP & PvE elements, 8 archetypes and 64 classes, naval content, castle sieges and many other awesome in-game systems. The world of Verra is designed to be immersive, with a rich lore, intricate political systems, and deep crafting and economy mechanics that cater to both casual players and hardcore enthusiasts alike. Starting on October 25, you will be able to enjoy the gameplay firsthand by taking part in Ashes of Creation Alpha 2.

  1. We gotta remember that the game is also being made by an indie studio, mostly being funded by one guy. Do we really want them to put their comparatively limited resources into VA:s when they can use AI to reduce the time and cost and still get good voice lines? I find it really strange that people feel AI voice lines are scummy, except when you are stealing peoples voices (which they arent doing in this case). I do agree with another comment though that they probably should spend some resources on VA:s for some larger questlines since AI voices can be scuffed.

Im curious though, for people that don't want AI voices, what is the reason for this?

  2. I like the AI as long as its temporary or not used for every single npc. If its really good I can deal with it in the testing periods, but for the release I was expecting actual voiceover actors…
At the end of the day I don't really pay attentiont to that, but voiceover will always be 100% more natural with real actors, which feels more immersive. I just hope that important NPC's or cinematics are voiced by humans at least.

  3. Yes, in this context. Key factor here is that these voices are coming from staff who chose to participate. This isn't data scrapped from the web.
I will gloss over a wall of text (I'm a speed reader, I will get the basics by looking at every 5th word or so).
Voice overs give me a little more immersion and context than I'd otherwise have, and this is a bonus in my opinion.
Also, AI gives the option for dynamic text that changes depending on story arcs in ways that would be impossible to do with real voice actors. It may even be able to say our character's names.

  4. Agree. Who Phucking cares. Can I just be allowed to play a game and Not be hostage to it? Like, ya, I dont watch the movies either. I can read. I like my time to be mine in a game. If I had to sit and listen to some computer generated voice for Every interaction with an NPC…..well …πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ As if this is Ever coming out.

  5. As long as they don't use garbage, cheap AI voices I'm all for it personally. My personal viewpoint is that AI is what's finally going to bring innovation to the MMO genre (and…everything else really, but MMOs in particular). Part of the problem with MMOs is the need to maintain regular ongoing content. Well, AI will at some point be able to provide dynamic side/world content generated in real time, which will fill the gaps between patches much better than whatever repetitive activity any given MMO offers right now.

For now, we can at least have a lot more voiceovers. It just has to not be terrible.

  6. Could care less if it’s ai voiced or uses real actors or just text, I he only thing that matters is cost and long term ongoing development efforts, whatever keeps the cost down at reasonable prices. The vast majority of players aren’t going to listen to or read the quest dialogue anyway, so keep it cost effective and easy to reuse for future uses.
