Combat is the back bone of the majority of video games. Done right and it will be praised. Done wrong and people will hate playing your game. Heading into Alpha 2 we will find out if Ashes of Creation has what it takes to make combat great.

Ashes of Creation is a unique take on the MMORPG experience. Our world structure is dynamic, and built to react to your actions. Cities will rise and fall as you shape the world of Verra. Quests and secrets will unlock as populations gather and their needs grow. As the world’s NPC structure is established in real-time, you will have the ability to destroy what’s been created, paving the way for new developments, populations, and change. Political strife and intrigue will play a very real role in the structure of your experience. Gone are the days of static worlds; change is here to stay!

  1. It has occurred to me that I can simply write an entire page of meaningless drivel here and no one, absolutely not a single soul, brave or cowardly, earnest or insincere, intrepid or cowed, would express any objection whatsoever just so long as the almighty algorithm was appeased in such a manner that it would dutifully write down in its tremendous book of deeds that the great and powerful Ritchie had, indeed and forsooth, well and truly, received in the fullness of time, beyond any shadow of a doubt, without remorse or recrimination, according to the ancient customs, in accordance with the lore of the Ancestors, by all that is Holy, and as proclaimed in the great halls of the Stalwarts, a comment suitable for framing and notation in the annals of the Forgotten. PS: I played the video muted while eating a breakfast burrito.

  2. I believe that for the future of the game skill-based reactionary combat will be more beneficial for garnering younger players to MMOs. Might be a hot take, but I don't think listening to older generation MMO players is necessarily a good idea. Hopefully Intrepid gives us that old MMO feel with updated combat.

  3. I'm interested on how large of a portion of DPS auto-attacking is. If it's large enough, i'm thinking of going with a Bard/fighter sword and board melee build.
The Bard life steal song seemed so OP for long grinding sessions.

  4. Good video, many AoC content creators don't talk about combat, which is Intrepid's weak point right now. As a young player, my preferences are clear, I'm a fan of action combat, and in my opinion target combat is obsolete for these times. If you want to create a modern MMOS, you have to implement modern systems, you can't rely on old MMOS, and that's the debate that Intrepid and Steven are trying to avoid. They're not going to attract young audiences with tab target combat, and for now almost all skills are target.

Another thing, they changed the basic combat of the fighter, and that hurt me, because the melee attack demonstration from the 2022 live stream is the best they've shown. And they modified it to adapt it to target combat :C

  5. Tab or right-clicking the target is a way to hard lock. I would see myself using TAB since I don't want to chase things on the screen with a mouse like a "clicker" does. The problem might be that tab could select the wrong thing by cycling through random stuff and right clicking a player hiding in a sea of players would be difficult.

  6. Not taking a stance on combat and trying to please everyone is a mistake. Action camera doesn't change the fact that it's still auto targeted. People will just play the most optimal thing so having a fake choice is useless. The class kits they showed are too stereotypical, nothing very unique or unforseen. There's a lot of cool systems in the game but combat is the main thing keeping my hype away.
