An interesting Ashes Of Creation debate and discussion. I think we’ll be getting this system of weapon swapping regardless of feedback, but im curious on everyone’s initial thoughts on this before testing. Does it add a layer to combat or take away meaning of choice? This is something thats not anything newly revealed, but wanted to draw attention to it for those who may not have noticed it mid combat of the stream (Thanks Vyril!). A lot of games have this option, but some MMOs dont. Comment your thoughts.

How long should the cooldown be on swapping weapons? 👀

Hmm if hammers did more damage to plate and swords more damage to cloth and i could swap to mid max my warrior that would be cool. And for ranged weapons give them optimal dps range so a bow could get a bonus at 30-60m and a wand could be 15-20m. Idk i feel like weapons don't really matter in mmos, like most of the time its a stat stick
Personally, I'm not a big fan of being able to pull multiple different weapons out of my pocket or something. It breaks muh immersion, sorf of xD. Having 2 sets of weapons (like dagger + bow) is the sweet spot for me.
BUT it would be nice if it was designed to be a class specific action for warriors maybe and dip into the master-at-arms fantasy.
I just want a giant staff for a mage like in silkroad. IT would also be nice to coast those fight ending abilities that kill tens of players if used properly but you cant have everything.
Hmm. I’m ok with weapon swaps on equipped items, like bow to sword. But would be against every character bringing every weapon in their inventory and swapping between them all. That sort of thing should be out of combat only, if not further restricted.
As for the weapon swap during combat, maybe a 1s delay or something while swapping would make more sense. Instant doesn’t seem right.
I don't like the idea of loadout swaps mid fight, even if only weapons. I'm not one of those that thinks "all things must be immersive" or what have you, but….for my tastes it's just too far fetched to act like your toon is out there carrying 50 different weapons around and can use them all in a single battle. I don't know that I can give an exact reason why. I guess it just feels like too much/too extreme to me. Tactics go out the window when you can use whatever is best from second to second. Sometimes choices need to be made and consequences need to occur. Oh you brought a knife to a gun fight? Guess you are about to get dead. How is it rock-paper-scissors when everyone has all 3 at their fingertips in an instant? It messes up the combat feel. I like what New World has done with the whole "gear swapping out of combat only" mechanic. It's a short enough CD to get out of combat to make it useable but long enough to make you disengage, run and hide to swap. As for how long the CD needs to be…hmmm that's definitely a "wait and see how it feels" issue since we don't yet know how the combat will flow and feel in Ashes. Sounds like something for our intrepid content creators to test in Q3 sooner rather than later 😎
Test it in the upcoming alpha.
Reminds me of eso with out the bar swap
Great video, props because no one is speaking on this and it's super important IMO.
I want the option to toggle to one weapon, which doubles the weapons stats removes Your other weapon and gives You an additional 5% mana, and damage bonus.
That way I can choose to not have weapon swapping and it be somewhat balanced. Remember, You'd be giving up on auto attacks from range or if You give up Your melee weapon You can't parry or block in melee range.
Hit like if You agree.
I feel this will add a massive skill gap for players but if the cool down isn't long enough I feel it will be massively absused by the no life gamers
I wouldn't want infinite sets, but one ranged two melee gives a decent amount of versatility without innecessary complexity.
It’s good for build variety. 3 sec swap would be where I want it. The real question is are classes locked to certain weapons
It might be nice, depending on how much Damage a shield blocks, versus a 2H weapon block.
I still think they should allow us to spec out of Range Weapon Slots, for increased Caster damage or Melee damage.
Great video! I haven't noticed that either. I'd say from how in both clips (wand-to-greatsword and bow-to-mace/shield), the character stops for a couple seconds before the swap. This leads me to believe the actual hotkey/loadout swap has not been implemented, and the latter example was done the same way as the former (i.e. opening up inventory and switching main weapon). If we see this swap happen while the character is moving or dodging, that would be a better indicator of a hotswap.
Great discussion point though, and I'm excited to see how viable weapon swapping is in Alpha 2! "Arsenal Debate" is a great name as well, reminds me of a sci-fi book called Iron Prince haha
I like it for adaptability, but not as part of a rotation.
More than a cooldown I would give it a castbar, so swapping mid combat poses a risk and is only done when the benefits outweighs such risk.
That's for unequipped weapons. Ranged <-> melee swapping should be instant, since we'll have a ranged and a melee slots in our equipment.
btw, the person swapping is the tank, not the ranger, someone made the same mistake in Narc's discord.
Ofc you should be able to swap midcombat, this shouldnt even be a debate.
It makes the combat interesting and tests players adaptability. Question is-How fast should be weapon swapping? Should you have an animation to pull it out of the sheat since that will be a thing in this game? Also, there shouldn't be a CD on weapons swapping either since not a single game with that feature has it.
Great topic! Give me allllll the skill gaps.
I like it because i don't think it is that strong, since you have to level up certain weapon skill trees.
Ive never played a game where I thought “Wow it feels like I should be able to swap to a different weapon rn” but I’ve played loads of games where I thought “I feel like instant weapon swapping takes away from weapon choice and makes everyone play similar” so I’m kinda weary
I like it, not trying to be one to always bring up WoW but i loved on my warrior weapon swapping macros and stance macros to switch to defensive stance and sword and board to disarm the opponent then go back to zerk stance with 2 hand and continue pummeling them. But i understand that it wasnt really all that popular. It will add depth…i dont see how it wouldnt add it. Only thing though is people might not like it because it raises the skill ceiling.
I'm all for the mid combat weapon swap. Maybe a few restrictions like, just a "Slot 1" and "Slot 2" (as opposed to swapping to any of the 101 weapons in your backpack) to keep it sane, though.
I don't like weapon swapping mid-combat. I get why a tank for example might want to do it if said tank has let's say a PvE setup (sword and shield) and might want to swap to a more heavy hitting PvP oriented weapon. However, I don't see the other classes having this issue. Just a note, swapping between what you already have on you, between ranged to melee is fine, what I mean is swapping out what you have equipped.
I would like to see a cooldown between swaps of selected weapons of melee and ranged weapons. Loadouts and weapon selection should only happen out of combat and a longer cooldown.
I hate weapon swapping in combat. I’d be ok with this if it was only doable outside of combat. To me, not that I’m a RPer in the slightest, but it ruins the feel that my character is a specialist in the weapon they are wielding. It especially feels bad since we will be investing so much effort and thought into our weapon skill trees and getting the right weapon crafted for our build. I’d rather be focused on a build and stay focused.
We should be allowed to swap our weapon into shield when we stunned or cc-ed. So we won't be one-shotted easily. Although technological incompatibility might cause server lag when hundreds of players swap around their weapon during pvp
I dont like the idea of being able to swap to any weapon mid combat, I think it adds a layer of complexity which is not necessary (atleast PVP-wise), specially in this game where it's suppossed to have massive battles. Just imagine a guild war or any other big pvp event where everyone is swaping builds, that'd be a shit show.
Weapon skill tree and class talent trree is more than enough to have build diversity for every archetype.
I'd be okay with an option for changing between ranged and melee weapons midfight, but I still prefer to use only one weapon.
I think it will make things interesting. I couldn't agree more with I guess we will see in A2.
