What is Ashes of Creation?
Ashes of Creation is a unique take on the MMO experience. Our world structure is dynamic and built to react to the actions of our players. Cities will rise and fall, their populations based on the history of the world as the players create it. Quests will unlock as these populations gather, their needs grow, and secrets are unlocked. As the world’s NPC structure is established in real time, players will have the ability to destroy what they’ve created, paving the way for new development, new populations, and real change. Political strife and intrigue will play a very real role in the structure of your world. Gone are the days of static worlds, change is here to stay.
Risk Vs Reward
All across Verra, you have the opportunity to experience massive warfare, participate in epic trade caravans, and gather valuable components to craft exquisite items. Not only will your fellow players be your adversaries; the creatures of the land and the very environment itself will pose a constant and fresh challenge. Will you siege castles to become royalty, defeat other guilds to showcase your prowess, shape the marketplace by being a successful trader, or earn renown by developing your artisan crafting skills? This is your story, you tell us!

I think that Steven and the team at Intrepid are pro PvP…what they are not is pro griefer. I don't think that that is a very difficult distinction to make. I look at the corruption system in the game as adjacent to the legal system in real life. Not to get to dark here but I'm trying to make a point. That point is that like in life, in the game, there will be rules. Sure you could go try to kill someone (in real life) but there are consequences to that. You may fail or succeed but either way if you get caught you will face the legal ramifications. In some ways the corruption system in Ashes is similar to this. Sure there is no chance of killing and just getting away with it as in real life. It is still just a game. However, what they are giving the player who is on the other end of attack is an option. You can fight back and then the combat becomes consensual and the corruption system no longer applies. If that player doesn't fight back then the attacking player has an option also…quit or face the consequences. Also there will be whole areas in which the corruption system doesn't apply such as the oceans, or in PvP specific arenas, dungeons, and battlefields. If this isn't enough for the so called hardcore PvP players then go find another game. This game is PVX and does not cater to any one group of players entirely. In any event the enjoyment from PvP should come from the challenge in it…I don't see what fun or challenge there is in killing unsuspecting people out in the open world who are just out gathering or traveling to the next node, who are not PvP oriented players, who aren't looking for a fight. That mindset is little more than a griefer with a predatory mentality. Without a corruption/legal system the game would just devolve into a free-for-all that would send the game into a downward spiral.
Great watch!
Genuinely enjoyable podcast to watch
Solid discussion on PvP. As a PvE focused player myself, it is nice to get another perspective on Ashes systems.
@47:45 Ashes already has this designated area, the Deep Ocean.
Enjoyed getting some good discussion around PvP, even though it's hard to talk about with how little information we have to play with. For the corruption conversation about people using corrupt alt accounts to feed their bounty hunters, I think that military nodes should come with a Court/Prison system. Just like in AA, if you are killed in PvP as a corrupted player then you get sent to trial, and a jury of players will vote on your guild. The jury has the option of placing that individual in prison for X amount of hours, and perhaps they even have the option of minimum or maximum sentences, or to post bail. This would mean any bounty hunter trying to cheese the system would find it inefficient, because their alt will have prison time and they would have to pay money to get them out and repeat the process. I think that would be a deterrent that is both fun for the average player, and punishing enough to not be worth it for anyone wanting to get around it.
