Ashes of Creation delivered on a killer Freehold update this past month in the livestream, but not everyone was impressed with what they saw. But does that make this Processing feature bad, or just something that is misunderstood by the community?

The real issue is that they dont give full explanation or limitations of the system, they just treat it as a standalone system which is not the case considering the game is a close system

My only worry is land baron guilds owning the economy atleast this portion of it. I understand that not everyone gets to win but it seems like solo freehold ownership will be rare. And it's cool you can share one with your family but then your taking design and customize options from 8 different people and it's not your piece of land anymore. Idk I'm torn and don't know how I feel about it
I think that in the shadow of the freeholds changing many people are forgetting the game is based around the Node system. Guilds are going to want their node to progress as much as possible, which is going to take all node citizens to accomplish. Freeholds are not the end all for the game they are just another drop of water in the bucket of the larger system.
I am concerned that larger guilds will acquire a majority of the available freeholds around the larger nodes, thus creating a monopoly for processed goods in each node. This will result in them controlling all meaningful crafting of higher level items. Just my thought on the system as it is now…
Yes it is bad. Gating the artisan classes to freehold possession is wrong. A player should not have to be the wealthiest, powerful, most connected player just to be a dirt farmer or breed some horses. However there are things you can do to fix or limit how bad it is. More processing buildings in city nodes like town stables for example. Larger plots for node housing that can have more crops or a stable as the area they have now is pathetically small. Public node owned lumbermills, mills, etc. Small instanced freeholds are also an option such as a access point that leads to a small area of the Underrealm where they can build a freehold with smaller space. Basically this works the same as node apartment housing but gives space for crops and other processing buildings.
Ritchie thank you for once again being on point. We still don't have nearly enough information to come to any conclusions. Top tier processing has been delegated to freeholds for several years now and it is a design decision, which will shape the economy. Also Ashes was from the beginning a game that requires multiple people working together to achieve anything meaningful. I don't see a reason to expect endgame crafting to follow a different philosophy.
A lot of people also tend to forget the family system, which allows up to 8 people to have access to freehold content and also the only content being gated by freeholds is not essential to individual progression. I also share the concern about large guilds controlling disproportionate amount of freeholds available and this will be subject to testing as is everything you have seen so far. Also in case someone doesn't know this, every player can only own 1 freehold per account. Unfortunately not everyone who wants a freehold will be given one, that would go directly against the core philosophy of AoC and as everything in the game it will require effort to achieve making it meaningful to have.
if ur a casual, wich most of us are, then youll just not gonna be the top guy, period
Casuals tend to Gather, low barrier of entry.
The biggest, issue is you cant get one until 50, and they want you to bid for them. It's the bidding that screws everybody over. It should be 100% first come first server.
Nodes aren't going to flip that much, to much invested, and people are going to fight like hell. A proper built node maybe to valuable for the entire server.
I'm betting in the end they'll make 2 sizes of freehold. The 1.5km ones they currently are planning for and the .5 they originally has in mind. If they makes 1,000 1.5km freeholds and 3,000.5km freeholds larger freeholds will be even more rare but more people will be able to at least get a small one without taking up any more room on the map.
Ashes of Creation is a game that will be dominated by hardcore guilds. I have a feeling this will be a really, really hard game to excel in as a solo player.
I feel like the biggest takeaway for me from all of this, is to just take a step back and breath a moment. Its important to remember that we haven't seen these initial designs executed upon yet and a lot can change before and after. I think my main goal is to get into the weeds of the crafting system (provided they are good), as long as i can get my enjoyment out of that i have no problem integrating with a larger group.
Needs testing. But I suspect that the system just as it is will allow most people who really want and work to get high end processing, to have access to a freehold.
I think everyone is missing the point that these freehold facilities will be open to all other players – and only the house will be inaccessible. That means, there will be a user economy where freehold owners will receive payment for other people using their workshops. The only concern could be that it is unsafe to bring your mats to a freehold that may not be protected well… but I think it encourages the caravan system and also adds some competition value for pvp where some freehold services will be renowned for being safer than others due to guilds providing a level safety for the node citizens.
Honestly having the end game processing behind a freehold will keep those items rare. Making a processing station as part of a node capital city that can do low/moderate processing is also a good idea.
They need to let guilds form alliances with each other so that you can be in a small guild and still be able to access this stuff. Otherwise, people who don't like doing the big guild politicking are going to be left out. Seems like a game from AGS was built almost exactly like that and flopped immediately. But that's just one nerd's opinion.
As I see it the auction system for acquiring Freeholds will benefit the land sellers as they will just form together to buy the freehold permits in the auction house solely for the purpose of reselling at marked up prices. When a node gets sieged you can be sure they will be stationed everywhere they need to be to quickly buy up new permits should a node fall.
So much of this game sounds awesome, but so much of it is completely dependent on a massive "no life" community. If the whole thing just dies in a year post launch, I'd not be surprised. I get what they're going for, but I honestly think they're tailoring a game to a player base that no longer has the time or desire to be what they need it to be. Everyone says they want things like this …… until they realize how much time it's going to eat. How easy it is to lose everything if you slack just a bit. There's a reason full loot PvP games have never become the massive hit everyone thinks they should be. It's because a game becoming a job is the fastest way to kill a game. I really hope I'm wrong, but things like this make me think Intrepid is making a game "everyone" wants that "nobody" is going to be playing in a very short amount of time.
I don't like how people HAVE to say that AoC is in its Alpha phase and not a polished and released game. Those people probably never followed a game development before.
I feel like it could be a bad thing, as only the power gamers will have access to the best crafting, it will basically force everyone else to become gathering professions due to lack of access.
In those times you don't access to it… you just BUY IT FROM THE PLAYERS.
refining, like the crafting skill itself,. will have real value as such.
You cant just have an alt do it, like every other damn mmo.
I think its completly fine
