Ashes Of Creation Is Still Missing this core combat mechanic? How do you feel about this and which solution would you give? Leave your thoughts below. This secondary resource concept shall be tested in Alpha 2
“One thing that we’re kind of toying around with the idea of, is giving everybody a universal active block mechanic, in which case the shield version would probably be better but you’d still be able to parry or whatnot with a two-handed weapon, or even maybe a dual wield.” – Trad Thompson

Cool cat , the combat in this game looks like everything is made of wood .
I like new world's take on dodge roll based on Armor rating. Never really understood a heavy Armor being able to roll. You thinking about checking out throne and liberty? I figure that might be a good game to try out in 5 years before beta 3 of Ashen
This game is why I’m getting a PC
What if the block was just a buff based on the amount of armor and health you have? At that point it would be a base value for each build.
You're STILL missing core facial hair
I cant wait for this game man. What about a block bar that increases when having a shield or Heavy Armor. IDK as long as there is no 100% Mit Perma-Block, Perma-Stun, or Infinte Roll Dodge then Im fine with it.
Im not gonna lie ive known about ashes of creation since like 2017… and to be honest my views of it have just gotten more and more negative .. the graphics suck and the combat really doesn’t look like its improved at all really in the past 5 years..
Cat
That cat thick af boi. Best video youve ever made just cause of bro in the background.
yea Stam bar I think should be for dodge + block, keep it simple. I think there's some things to be improved with cleric, seems kind of sluggish compared to fighter and ranger showcases imo
The video was cool. NERF CLERIC! already IMO. I think that stamina should be tied into active blocking. But the video told me that the game is still in its infant stage. I'm starting to wonder if we'll see beta drop before 2024.
KITTY!!!
I hope 2 bars for dodging with stam bar, like Gw2 and then individual block spells that are diff per class
Whatever system they choose, I hope it's not a complicated one. Make it simple with a very few modification.
Whatever system they make for block and dodge, I really hope you can't just spam them mindlessly like Elden Ring or New World. Having multiple dodges almost always available is just an easy cop out which diminishes the challenge.
I think Lost Ark had great dodge/leap system where it was tied behind a cooldown. You actually had to think what attacks you should just position yourself out of and what attacks you should use the dodge for or else you would get slammed.
For AoC, probably the best solution is to put block and dodge behind a stamina bar. But they, especially dodging, should be very stamina consuming to limit the amount of blocking and dodging you can do. I think you should be able to do only one dodge at a time and then wait for the stamina bar to get full before you can dodge again. At a base level it should take considerable amount of time to refill the stamina bar to full, at least like 5 seconds. As for blocking, shields should be more efficient at blocking, ie you take less damage and it consumes less stamina to block. If the hit you try to block consumes more stamina than you have at the time, you should get staggered or something. Then there also could be ways to improve your blocking, dodging and stamina regen with skills, augments and the type of armor you are wearing.
Personally, I think if there are people who say the game is "Upright Bad", they either don't know anything about the MMORPG genre. Or certain companies have started to use false/botter accounts to make them appear less successful, changing people's views from positive to negative. This isn't new, and certainly not in the business industry. Twitter and Reddit have been changing people's minds for years now. That and it won't cost you more than 10 dollars to buy yourself 500 followers or positive comments on any social media including youtube. Bot accounts have been a tool in online business for a long time.
What do bigger gaming companies do when their own products aren't as strong as they had hoped, and someone else decides to up the bar? (without p2w as well). When you cant level with someone, all you can do to compete is try to take them down. That is what is to be expected, and that's the double edge sword effect of being this open about development. However, since Intrepid isn't as dependent on investors/backers the positive effects are far greater.
This is still Alpha, people take it like the game is going to officially release next week.
Do you want to know how New World looked in Alpha ?. Because at release, it was pure shit. And it's still pure shit to this day today, not to mention that New World isn't actually a True MMORPG. AoC Alpha 2 is far greater than New World 1 year into its Release. Not just Gameplay design but Graphically speaking as well.
(:
because is pre-alpha
yeah but why do you think the negative side to blocking would be fun?
The gameplay loop with active block is boring and dull. Actively block, enemy attacks, use one ability and then active block again, repeat
The best tank mechanics I've seen is from original WoW, the warrior had active defensive abilities that felt impactful. Oh, I'm in this situation where i pulled a5-6 mobs? Well, let me use this 40 second CD ability where I block 100% for 5 seconds. Oh, the boss is in a frenzy? Let me cast my 2 minute CD ability reducing my damage by 50% for 5 seconds Tanking needs to be engaging in Ashes for it to succeed for long term player satisfaction. If the gameplay loop is dull and boring, like with an active block, then very few players will play it and there will be a tank shortage.
I've played a handful of the popular mmos and I don't think i've enjoyed tanking as much as I did when WoW first released. I've been diving back into older mmos again to understand what works and doesnt work and this is my 2 cents in regards to tanking.
There is already a downside to blocking, you're not doing damage or healing.
They'll probably show the Stamina bar when they show the updated Tank.
