I was watching Amongold’s coverage of the Josh Strife Hayes “controversy” behind Ashes of Creation when he confused it with Pantheon: Rise of the Fallen, and it sparked a very interesting conversation at this point in the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zDvAORt6eh8&t=1596s
“It’s not based off what is said, it’s based on what is seen.” This quote from Asmongold is extremely accurate, as you can’t ask people to get hyped over a vision alone: you need something visual to attach to it.
On the one hand you have Pantheon: Rise of the Fallen, asking it’s people to trust in a vision and never showing anything more than wire frames and concept art. And then you have Ashes of Creation showing amazing visuals, VFX, and actual combat + questing. It’s not what you say, it’s what you show.

MMORPG players will try any game that has positive reviews or word of mouth, so if it is good on release it will be successful. That is the most important thing, not how well they look in development. These developer vids only effect you tubers and streamers for the most part, however, if crowd funding is needed, it is huge. I admit it can also effect initial box sales and popularity. I myself enjoy watching a game develop in front of my eyes almost as much as playing them. For me personally not to try a game, the art style must be a real turn off or it has game systems I absolutely hate, like a pay to win cash shop.
AoC is also going to have to do some of what we've discussed before. It's going to have to provide different rulesets if it wants to thrive as much as games with modern design philosophies. Check this out: https://youtu.be/Cvuj0DceOHI
Most WoW and FFXIV players will hate the PvP mechanics and will quit in the long run if AoC devs don't address it. It may look pretty, but if people hate the gameplay or being griefed nonstop, then AoC really is doomed. I'm not saying they won't address issues like this, and I really hope they do. I hope AoC succeeds, and I hope Pantheon succeeds. I think there is enough space in the genre for new games that have different design philosophies. They may just not all fit in one neat little package.
