  1. Limiting the barrier to entry is first. Retaining players that will make them play and remained sub is second and I'd say the most important part.
Risk vs Reward – but don't make it too punishing for casuals and get them to loop of fun. It's a very delicate balance and I hope Intrepid can pull it off.

  2. That's hard to say…given the already in place fan base that wow had. But we didn't have the plethora of youtube, twitch etc back then.
I chalk wows patrial succes as I do MTG…it was a cultural phenomenon, the right time at the right place with something new and fun.
Steven has always said he wasn't making this be the wow killer. If the game is good, fun, ans works as intended I think they stand a good chance at topping the sub numbers. I chalk this up to current state of the mmo genre, and that Steven and his team are the underdogs here. We shall see…I'm rooting for them 110%!
Great vid as always, keep them coming!

  3. Wow will never have that feeling again, why? Because they went full on modern approach. Secret is hidden in small things like table top RPGs combat vs mobs where you trade attacks and with each attack you and mob are on same HP, but because player has some spells, he then wins every combat vs mob, but because in vanilla WoW players had less spells it always ended up with player having around 60 % of HP, therefore he should always be on full awareness how he pulls mobs so he does not die if he pulled one too many, mobs are often grouped well so you had to be strategic about that. If you deliver that kind of combat professions will have big impact, and if you design gear drops well so that profession gear is the best for lvling, you then create that vibe classic wow had. It is simple as this – classic delivers some kind of feeling like fantasy dwarfs mentality – hard as a steel where work is precious and progress is meaningful, players often feel more patient because combat is classical and they can't rush like in modern design where it creates more confor and positive/modern feelings like zoomer vibe. Colour wise it can be described as classic – brown, modern – zoomer white. Also to mention lvling speed, it is too easy and fast now days that even if dev designed professions to be the best gear for lvling it does not matter anyway, it should also be designed so that in lvl 20 you create some weapon that you worked few hours farming to replace it only after 15lvls or so, that means good progression and that was like in vanilla wow, I remember that spellcasters could create pre raid BiS items in lvls around 30 to 40 and replace them only in raid end game content, that is sandbox gearing if I understood right and only that can create those small feelings that wow had. I hope AoC goes vanilla WoW way and learn from these little things I mentioned, if they create zoomer like game, it will interest me only for little bit, but maybe I am wrong…

  4. Their biggest obstacle ….. can they make this genre feel new again? No doubt tons of former MMORPG players are looking to this game to do just that. Problem is at a certain point most people just lose passion for a genre of game if they played it so much at some point it became obsession like. Once the burnout hits, and it almost always does, it's harder to get the excitement back for another try and even harder to sustain it. Again, especially if the new game doesn't feel new enough.

  5. Sorry for another comment, but I do strongly believe it will be good success of they stick to their original ideas, these people that request more and more comfortable design are soft and they are the ones that have fallen under that cloud of comfort thinking and having an easy way out… Those that are full for old-school way have a proper reason, but I think the ideal would be when old-school meets new era, it will create more patient people that learn to get cozy in game and it won't create too many tryharders that sweat about every thing because their identity is tied with in game achievements… If you don't believe me that these players don't exist, then you don't know what wow community became…

  6. WOW is a dumbed down version of Everquest. Ashes of Creation is what I and my friends have been waiting for for a long time. Ashes of Creation should crush ALL of the other MMOEPGs, but I expect some of the lesser games like WOW to survive. I do believe that the newer games will be wiped out.

  7. Nice job on this one. It's funny that you said sticking to Stevens vision is the key thing to making this game succeed, I actually have a video I'm working on right now that is built around that central premise. Good video, keep em coming!

  8. Honestly I was kinda done with Kickstarter MMOs for awhile till AOC came out, unlike MMOs like Pantheon or COE, this one definitely has the most passion and they're actually providing updates that matter within IMHO reasonable time.

  9. I mean currently if we exclude the sudden burst of WoW population cause of wrath FF14 currently is No.1 and personally I can’t see Ashes even being closed to the top 3 because it has too many systems in place for the hardcore that it will kill a lot of interest to the casual base.

Far too much of the game is pvp centric and time gated by seasonal systems etc that’s without the node system coming into account it’s not going to be a casual player experience which limits its scope. I think it’s going to do well and it needs to do well to keep its systems in check which are dependent on players being active.

  10. As long as scope/content creep doesn't happen they should be fine, stick with what was promised and don't start randomly planning side stuff that nobody needs/wants that slows production down and just stick with the plan

  11. Ashes will be doing great if it gets 3rd spot under WoW and FFXIV. Those games are just so casual friendly, I don't see ashes overtaking them but I don't care it will still be the best game in my eyes. The best game imo isnt the most popular ones, for example in terms of MOBAs Dota 2 is superior to LoL but LoL is more casual friendly and easier to get into so its more popular amongst other reasons.

  12. WoW was new player friendly because it had zero risk involved as well as a very linear progression system. If, like you say in the video, AoC will be balancing a risk vs reward system and a non linear progression path to content it will inherently NOT be new player friendly. I'm excited for the game of course but it seems like your perspective here does fall flat of the premise you set up.

  13. One big advantage AoC has over Classic WoW launch, is server segmentation. I got a terrible server in WoW, and had no way to find a better one. So I took some time off, then hit a series of great servers. Since there is no box price with AoC, I may spend a bit more, and make 3-4 accounts, and see which server I am happiest on. And I will be watching the internet to hear rumors about the other servers.

  14. My biggest concern is open world dungeons, raids, and pvp. Wow players enjoy the raiding and competitive mythic dungeons which are instanced and pvp can't interrupt you. These features in ashes are polar opposites. I hope players can drop one version for the other and feel at home.
