The WoW Exodus – What happens when you fail to keep pace with your competition

World of Warcraft is in trouble. It’s massively behind on delivering new content to its playerbase, and many are finding fresher pastures in games like Final Fantasy XIV and Elder Scrolls Online.

Now Blizzard are quick to point to the global pandemic as a reason for this appalling lack of development, but a quick survey of these two rivals in particular puts paid to this kind of argument. Put simply, Blizzard are just not keeping up with the Joneses, and even their own dedicated WoW content creators like Bellular and Asmongold are looking across to these other MMOs in order to get their fix.

Not only that but competition in the MMO space is only going to get tighter with the likes of Ashes of Creation and New World peeking over the parapet. World of Warcraft is experiencing its second failure of an expansion in a row, a self-inflicted wound no less, as interest in the veteran MMO falls away in favour of the rivals who are consistently providing their players with content, innovation and communication, something that Blizzard seem utterly unable to do in their current state.

Is WoW dead? Of course not. Is it limping badly after shooting itself in the foot multiple times? Absolutely. And Final Fantasy XIV in particular has one heck of a headstart on you.

  1. 5 days ago, I made the move. I ditched WoW after 16 years of dedication to move into FF14… Best gaming/entertainment decision I've made in my entire life thus far. It's amazing how fast somethign you have loved for so many years, can disintigrate into mere mush in just a matter of hours, yes, hours. 10 hours of FF14 was all it took for me to realize just how piss poor Blizzard is as a corporation, how awful the community has gotten and how antiquated the "systems" in WoW really is.

Good riddance and I will never in my life set foot again on Azeroth, the developers hates the community, dont care about player feedback, constantly make decisions based upon their own preference… even if it's not shared with the wast majority of the community, who the * does that? That's literal corporation suicide.

You have been part of the inspiration for me personaly to dare to try out something new and i'm really happy that I did, so thank you 🙂
